The extremely recent past is often disorienting. Often it's the picture of you from six months ago that seems distant and strange, not the one from six years ago. Such is the case with T-Wayne, a recently discovered collaboration between Lil Wayne and T-Pain. T-Pain shared it last week in a spontaneous outburst, eight songs that he said had been lying around since 2009. Released into the wild in 2017, they sound less like a "lost mixtape" and more like a stale tweet in the draft folder, one you accidentally send out after five or six drinks.

Back in 2009, Lil Wayne had already stormed the gates of the English language and negotiated the terms of his complete and total surrender. The concessions he got were shocking: it was agreed that "dwarf" and "barf" could rhyme; that "when I was five, my favourite movie was Gremlins" was a feasible thing to mention during a gangsta rap song; that it was safe, even advantageous, for rappers to call themselves "pussy monsters". In 2008, with Tha Carter III, he sold 1,000,000 copies of such songs in one week. In 2009, rap became a domain he terraformed to resemble the inside of his mind.
